The Platform for Advanced Scientific Computing (PASC) Conference is an interdisciplinary conference in high performance computing that brings together domain science, applied mathematics and computer science - where computer science is focused on enabling the realization of scientific computation.

PASC18, the fifth annual PASC Conference, is co-sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the PASC structuring project.
The conference is managed by the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS). The local host of PASC18 is the University of Basel, one of the 12 certified public universities in Switzerland coordinated by swissuniversities.

PASC18 will be held from July 2 to 4, 2018 at the Congress Center Basel, located in Basel, Switzerland.

Scope

Theme: Fast and Big Data, Fast and Big Computation

Challenge: Exposing and Expressing Massive Parallelism in Scientific Problems to Exploit Heterogeneous Parallelism in High Performance Computers

Scientific computing is about solving application problems, and there are two major focuses: extreme scaling of computation and deriving knowledge from massive amounts of data. These two aspects are closely coupled: large computations consume and generate massive amounts of data, and processing of big data requires large amounts of computational power, which increasingly depends on parallel computation.

The PASC18 theme Fast and Big Data, Fast and Big Computation emphasizes our vision of the close coupling of data and computation. Exposing and expressing massive and irregular parallelism in computational problems are key challenges for exploiting the massive and heterogeneous parallelism available in current, and expected in future, HPC systems, as well as to find new ways of generating scientific insight from data and models. Through its rich and interactive program, PASC18 aims to highlight the computational approaches that computational scientists, computer scientists, and practitioners employ today and will employ over the next decades to address these challenges.

Target Audience

PASC18  seeks to engage participants from academia, research labs and industry to address important issues in HPC and computational science. PASC18 is inviting researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange of expertise. The conference is an opportunity for researchers in branches of science that require computer modeling and high-performance simulations to discuss computational techniques and technologies.

Program

As in previous years, the technical program of PASC18 is organized around eight scientific domains:

  • Chemistry and Materials
  • Life Sciences
  • Physics
  • Climate and Weather
  • Solid Earth Dynamics
  • Engineering
  • Computer Science and Applied Mathematics
  • Emerging Application Domains (e.g. Social Sciences, Finance, …)

The three-day program includes keynote presentations, minisymposia, peer-reviewed papers, panels and poster sessions. The conference is co-sponsored by ACM SIGHPC, and full papers are published in the ACM Digital Library. The conference provides an exhibition space for showcasing cutting-edge research and development.

The program is available here.

Event Partnership

ISC High Performance 2018

ISC High Performance and the PASC Conference are pleased to announce that ISC 2018 and PASC18, two major events in the European HPC ecosystem, are scheduled back-to-back at the end of June and beginning of July 2018.

From June 24 – 28, 2018, ISC High Performance will embrace a range of subject matter that is critical to the development of high performance computing. The conference will also present you with the latest industry trends, networking and partnership opportunities. Join over 3,500 attendees and 150 exhibitors in Frankfurt, Germany, for the most comprehensive HPC conference in Europe. Visit the conference website

The following week, we welcome you to Basel, Switzerland, for PASC18. Frequent, direct train services link Frankfurt to Basel in less than 3 hours.

Don’t miss the opportunity to combine the two events. ISC High Performance and PASC look forward to welcoming you to Germany and Switzerland for thought-provoking technical sessions and additional networking opportunities.

About the PASC structuring project

The PASC structuring project is supported by the Council of Federal Institutes of Technology (ETH Board). The structuring project has been initiated in 2013 and the second phase will come to completion in 2020.
PASC is coordinated by CSCS, the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre of the ETH Zurich, in collaboration with the Università della Svizzera italiana and with the other Swiss universities and the EPF Lausanne.

The platforms overarching goal is to position Swiss computational sciences in the emerging exascale-era. It is complementary to the supercomputing-hardware-focused elements of the Swiss High-Performance and Networking (HPCN) initiative. The PASC consolidates and builds on the achievements of the High-Performance and High-Productivity Computing (HP2C) project, which supported 13 large-scale projects in the period 2009-2013.
PASC aims to promote joint effort to address key scientific issues in different domain sciences through interdisciplinary collaborations between domain scientists, computational scientists, software developers, computing centres and hardware developers. Thus, PASC builds on the principle of co-design, namely that software codes exploiting the potential of the next generation of computing architectures need to be jointly and interactively developed by these actors throughout the whole value chain.
